Cash donations – The most straightforward gift, whereby you will receive an income tax credit for that year. For convenience pre-authorized monthly contributions can also be set up.
Gifts of Public Securities – Gifts of appreciated public stocks, bonds, mutual fund units or shares to Virsa, are eligible for an extra tax incentive on top of the regular credit. The capital gains are eliminated, rather than the regular rate of 50% when sold.
Bequests – Leaving funds or property through a charitable bequest in a Will allows you to retain use of the property while living. Your estate receives the tax credit in the year of death.
Charitable Gift Annuities – This “life income” strategy combines a gift and an annuity that pays income to you. Virsa would receive an immediate gift and you will get partially tax-free payments from the annuity for life.
Gifts of Insurance – Life insurance can also be used to fund donations. Individuals can name Virsa as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy. If you transfer policy ownership to Virsa, you will receive tax credits during your life for each premium payment. Alternatively, if you wish to retain ownership of the policy it can create a tax credit for your estate at death.
Charitable Remainder Trusts – Created during your lifetime by placing assets in trust for the ultimate benefit of Virsa. You will continue to receive the income from the assets during your lifetime and an immediate (discounted) tax receipt is issued for a future gift.
What Is Virsa?
Virsa is a grassroots community-based organization dedicated to seeking solutions to the challenges facing the South Asian community in the Lower Mainland.
Our mission is …
Our Vision
Why Virsa Matters
Virsa, the feeling is why not come together, collaborate, and do something positive to help mitigate these negativities. We believe strong and positively motivated communities are the best sources for promotion of positive values among families.
With the help of our growing list of volunteers and sponsors and the help of our numerous community-based programs, we at Virsa are supporting youths and strengthening families thought education, outreach, and mentorship.
Virsa was created by the community for the community and want to ensure that remains true in the future.
CAPS: Child and Parent Success
The CAPS program is an extremely successful program that focuses on building healthy relationships between parents and their children. The program’s success lies in its ability to teach participants the skills and techniques necessary to contribute to one another’s success. Parents and children leave the program with the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships based upon better communication. The program is divided into two workshops and runs out of local schools.
All-Stars
All-Stars is Virsa’s youth basketball program and is run in collaboration with the Delta Police Department and the Delta School District. Once a week, our drop-in program allows youths to improve their basketball skills, engage in friendly competition, and build rapport with the Virsa volunteers that oversee the program. The program’s schedule changes with the Summer/Fall seasons to ensure youths get an appropriate balance of staying active and involved.
Mentorship
Our exciting mentorship programs, which continue to grow, promote youth self-esteem, self-worth and enable youths to envision and actualize their own potential. As school based programs, each mentorship program caters to the students’ and schools’ needs. The project based twelve week programs allow youths to tap into their leadership skills while taking ownership roles on various projects. The projects, which benefit other community organizations, are designed to allow youths to experience the fulfillment of community involvement and to see how individual efforts can make a difference.
Inspirational Speaker Series
Who has inspired you lately? Our inspirational speaker series launched Fall-2009 with motivational speaker Rick Bains will highlight a unique individual every month. Speakers from various backgrounds and walks of life will share their successful and inspirational stories with the community. The program, while still in its infancy, is rapidly gaining popularity with the growing list of exceptional speakers. Virsa is already fortunate enough to have the support of such speakers as Jet Sunner from the RCMP, Vikram Vij of Vij’s and Rangoli Restaurants, Grant Acheson from Canadian Reserves, and Arvinder Bubber from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Buccha Party
On-air Sundays and Mondays on the Shaw Multicultural Channel, Buccha Party is a televised show South Asian children can finally call their own. This educational half-hour program is catered towards children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. The creative writers have put a great deal of effort into Buccha Party so young minds can enjoy a bright, colorful program that encourages learning.
