CHILD AND PARENT SUCCESS PROGRAM
WHAT IS IT?
The CAPS program is an extremely successful program that focuses on building healthy relationships between parents and their children. The mandate of the program is to teach participants the skills and techniques necessary to contribute to one another’s success. Parents and children leave the program with the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships based upon better communication.
Nine major topics are covered, which are:
HOW OFTEN?
The program consists of two, 2.5hour sessions that are one week apart. The first session is the delivery of information and leaves the participants with thought provoking questions. The participants are then asked to put into action two or three of the techniques they learned during the first session to share their findings with the group. During the second session, a discussion takes place amongst the participants to share responses to the questions and their experiences of implementing some of the techniques. Participants can and are encouraged to repeat sessions to master the techniques.
WHERE?
We’ve had a significant amount of success working at Sexsmith and Henderson Annex. The Principals of both of these schools are highly supportive to have the CAPS program delivered at their schools. We are expanding the program to be delivered throughout other schools in the Lower Mainland. If you would like to see this program featured at your child’s school, please contact us by clicking here.
WHO SHOULD BE INVOLVED?
If you are a parent who is trying to improve your relationship with your child or want to be able to communicate more effectively with your child, you should register for this program.
If you are a child between the ages of 10-12 and are exploring ways to improve your communication with your parents, you should get involved with this program.
OKAY… BUT WHAT DO I GET OUT OF PARTICPATING IN THE PROGRAM?
The goal of this program is for parents and youth to come out of the sessions feeling like they have made progress in their relationship with one another. Be it through clearer communication, having a better understanding of one another’s perspective, or just building on an already strong foundation, this program is worth the short commitment.

CAPS SUCCESS STORY
Each month, a variety of families attend our CAPS workshops in Vancouver and our Virsa volunteers get to hear firsthand how the workshops have helped improve family relations. Bobby Nijjar, our lead CAPS volunteer, recently shared the following scenario in a program feedback session.
A recent participant in a CAPS session was a father who was concerned about his son’s lack of social and communication skills. He let us know that his child felt uncomfortable speaking and would run away if he was ever asked a question by those he did not know well. The family was becoming frustrated with this behavior and the parents would resort to demanding and yelling at their son to answer questions from various “aunties and uncles”.
After trying out some of the techniques suggested during the CAPS workshop, the father was able to help change his son’s behavior. He did so by linking appropriate behavior with the career path the child was aspiring to follow. Knowing his son hoped to be a police officer, the father created a list of qualities a good officer would possess. When frustrated with his child’s lack of response, the father would tell his son that in order to be a good police officer, he would need to be able to answer questions appropriately and communicate with diverse individuals. The father would use stories that included how police officers had to answer questions from the media, courts, victims and the accused, as well as point out police officers on TV and how they were modeling such behavior. In a short time, the father reported that he was amazed at how such a simple technique could lead to such a major improvement in his son’s behavior. He also commented that he was surprised that this had also lead to an improved father-son relationship.
By attending one of our CAPS workshop and understanding a new perspective, this father was able to better communicate with his child and improve family relations in the home.
