OUR PROGRAMS
CAPS: Child and Parent Success
The CAPS program is an extremely successful program that focuses on building healthy relationships between parents and their children. The program’s success lies in its ability to teach participants the skills and techniques necessary to contribute to one another’s success. Parents and children leave the program with the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships based upon better communication. The program is divided into two workshops and runs out of local schools.
All-Stars
All-Stars is Virsa’s youth basketball program and is run in collaboration with the Delta Police Department and the Delta School District. Once a week, our drop-in program allows youths to improve their basketball skills, engage in friendly competition, and build rapport with the Virsa volunteers that oversee the program. The program’s schedule changes with the Summer/Fall seasons to ensure youths get an appropriate balance of staying active and involved.
Junior Leadership Program
This project based program currently runs in select elementary schools in the Lower Mainland. It is designed to help build confident young leaders in our communities. Many students have benefited from this program through both group mentorship as well as one-on-one mentoring. The goals of the program are to help instill and encourage essential life skills within participants including self esteem, self worth, community involvement and leadership skills. These combined skills are allowing the students in the program to become confident individuals in school as well as in their lives at large.
Mentorship
Our exciting mentorship program continues to grow promoting youth self-esteem, self-worth and enables youth to envision and actualize their own potential. As school based programs, each mentorship program caters to the students’ and schools’ needs. The student to mentor ratio is kept very low (goal: 1 mentor per student) to ensure each participant receives specialized attention. Mentors are volunteers from within the community and work at improving students’ overall school experience by being both a tutor and a positive role model.
Inspirational Speaker Series
Who has inspired you lately? Our inspirational speaker series launched Fall-2009 with motivational speaker Rick Bains will highlight a unique individual every month. Speakers from various backgrounds and walks of life will share their successful and inspirational stories with the community. The program, while still in its infancy, is rapidly gaining popularity with the growing list of exceptional speakers. Virsa is already fortunate enough to have the support of such speakers as Jet Sunner from the RCMP, Vikram Vij of Vij’s and Rangoli Restaurants, Grant Acheson from Canadian Reserves, and Arvinder Bubber from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
